Why Instagram removes the space between your paragraphs
You write a caption with neat paragraphs, press Share, and Instagram shows one solid block of text. Two things cause this. First, Instagram collapses empty lines: a line with nothing on it is treated as noise and dropped. Second, if a line ends with a space (easy to do on a phone keyboard), the line break after it is often lost as well.
A caption spacer fixes both. It removes trailing spaces from every line and puts a single invisible character on each empty line. Instagram now sees a line with content, so it keeps it, and your caption keeps its shape.
How to space out an Instagram caption
- Pick Caption above the editor.
- Type or paste your caption exactly how you want it to look, with an empty line between paragraphs.
- Tap Copy spaced caption.
- In Instagram, paste into the caption field and post.
Check the preview on the right before you copy. It shows roughly what followers see in the feed, including where the text is cut off with “…more”.
How to add line breaks to your Instagram bio
Bios work the same way. Choose Bio, put each detail on its own line (what you do, where you are, a call to action) and add blank lines where you want breathing room. Copy the spaced bio and paste it into Edit profile → Bio.
The bio limit is 150 characters, and each spacer counts as one of them, so a bio with three blank lines has 147 characters left for words. The counter includes the spacers, so what you see is what Instagram counts.
Invisible blank or dot?
- Invisible blank (U+2800) is the default. It is a Braille “blank” character that shows as empty space on phones and computers, so the gap looks natural.
- Dot (.) is the classic workaround many creators used before invisible spacers. It is visible, but it works everywhere and some people like the look.
If a spacer ever shows up as a small box on an old device, switch to the dot.
Caption limits worth knowing
- 2,200 characters per caption, including emoji, hashtags and spacers.
- 30 hashtags is the hard limit; a post with more will not publish. Instagram itself currently suggests using about 3–5 relevant hashtags.
- Around 20 @mentions per caption.
- Only the first ~125 characters show in the feed before “…more”, so put the hook first.
Tips for readable captions
- Lead with one short line that makes people tap “more”.
- Keep paragraphs to two or three lines on a phone screen.
- Use line breaks for lists instead of long comma-separated sentences.
- Put hashtags at the end, after a blank line, so they don't interrupt the story.
- Read the preview once more before posting: spacing mistakes are much easier to fix before you publish than after.
Troubleshooting
- The spacing disappeared after pasting. Copy with the Copy spaced caption button rather than selecting the text in the box: the box shows your original text, the button copies the spaced version.
- I see small boxes instead of blank lines. A few older devices and apps don't have a glyph for the invisible blank. Switch to the dot spacer and copy again.
- The caption is cut off. Check the character counter. Anything over 2,200 characters (or 150 in a bio) won't fit, and Instagram won't post a caption with more than 30 hashtags.
- Hashtags don't show up as links. A hashtag needs a space or line break before it, and it can't contain spaces or punctuation.
The spacer works the same whether you post from an iPhone, an Android phone or Instagram on the web, because it only changes the text you paste in.
