GeoJSON Validator – Check and Fix GeoJSON Online

Paste GeoJSON and press Validate. You get JSON syntax errors with line and column, geometry problems with their exact path, and a map preview of everything that is valid.

Loading map editor…

What the validator checks

JSON syntax — missing commas, trailing commas, unquoted keys and unbalanced brackets are reported with the line and column where parsing failed.

GeoJSON structure (RFC 7946)

  • type must be FeatureCollection, Feature or a geometry type; features need a geometry member (it may be null).
  • Positions must be arrays of at least two numbers.
  • LineStrings need at least 2 positions; polygon rings need at least 4 and must be closed (first position = last).
  • GeometryCollections must contain valid geometries.

Common mistakes (warnings)

  • Coordinates outside ±180 / ±90 — usually latitude and longitude swapped, or data in a projected coordinate system.
  • Unclosed rings — closed automatically when loading, and reported.
  • Winding order — RFC 7946 recommends counterclockwise outer rings and clockwise holes. Many tools don't care, but some libraries do; press Fix winding order to rewind all polygons to the RFC 7946 order.
  • The obsolete crs member.

Each issue shows a path such as features[2].geometry.coordinates[0] so you can find it in your file. Valid features are drawn on the map even if others fail.

How to use it

Paste into the GeoJSON tab (replacing the empty collection), press Validate, fix the text, and press Apply to map to see the result.

How to use it

  1. Paste your GeoJSON into the GeoJSON tab (or open a file with Import).
  2. Press Validate. Errors and warnings appear with the path to each problem.
  3. Fix the text and validate again; press Format to pretty-print it.
  4. Press “Apply to map” to see the valid features and export the corrected file.

Common Use Cases

  • Debugging an API that returns GeoJSON
  • Checking files before importing into PostGIS or a GIS
  • Finding swapped lat/lng coordinates
  • Teaching the GeoJSON format

Frequently Asked Questions

Is RFC 7946 winding order required?
It is a recommendation (“SHOULD”), not a requirement, so the validator reports it as a warning. Some libraries rely on it; the Fix winding order button corrects all polygons.
Does the validator change my data?
Validate only reports. Loading data closes unclosed rings and drops features with null geometry, and says so; your original file is untouched.
Can it validate against a JSON Schema?
It checks the GeoJSON rules from RFC 7946 directly rather than a schema, and adds practical checks like swapped coordinates.

Why use this tool?

  • Line and column for JSON errors
  • Exact path for every geometry issue
  • Fix winding order in one click
  • Map preview of the valid data

Privacy

Your shapes and files stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap or Esri, and place searches go to OpenStreetMap Nominatim.
