KML to GeoJSON Converter (KML & KMZ)

Open a KML or KMZ file from Google Earth or Google My Maps, check it on the map, and download it as GeoJSON — names, descriptions and extended data included.

Converting KML to GeoJSON

KML is Google Earth's XML format; GeoJSON is the JSON format used by web maps, databases and most modern GIS tools. The converter reads every Placemark and turns it into a GeoJSON Feature:

  • <Point> → Point
  • <LineString> → LineString
  • <Polygon> with inner boundaries → Polygon with holes
  • <MultiGeometry> → GeometryCollection (use Split into parts if you want separate features)
  • <name> and <description> → name and description properties
  • <ExtendedData> → extra properties
  • Line and fill colours → stroke, fill and related properties

KMZ files (zipped KML) are unzipped in the browser automatically. Folders are flattened; placemarks without geometry are skipped and reported.

Before downloading you can inspect the result, delete features you don't need, rename things, or change the coordinate precision (Export → Coordinate precision) to make the file smaller.

Exporting from Google My Maps

In My Maps, open the ⋮ menu → Export to KML/KMZ. Tick "Export to a .KML file" for a plain KML, or keep KMZ — both work here.

How to use it

  1. Press “Open KML / KMZ file” (or drop the file on the map).
  2. Check the result on the map and in the Features list; edit anything you like.
  3. Press “Download GeoJSON”, or use Export for more options (precision, WKT, Shapefile).

Common Use Cases

  • Moving Google My Maps data into a web map
  • Loading Google Earth placemarks into PostGIS
  • Converting KML boundaries for Mapbox or Leaflet
  • Cleaning up KML before sharing

Frequently Asked Questions

Are KMZ files supported?
Yes. The KMZ is unzipped in your browser and its main KML document is converted.
What happens to KML styles?
Line and fill colours are kept as simplestyle properties (stroke, fill, …), which many web tools understand. Icons and label styles are not converted.
Are network links or ground overlays converted?
No. Only placemark geometries (points, lines, polygons and multi-geometries) are converted; images and network links are ignored.

Why use this tool?

  • KML and KMZ supported
  • Names, descriptions and data kept
  • Preview and edit before export
  • Runs locally — nothing uploaded

Privacy

Your shapes and files stay in your browser — nothing is uploaded. Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap or Esri, and place searches go to OpenStreetMap Nominatim.
